Easter is coming and seaside areas of Apulia are starting to be prepared for the approaching of the tourist season.

During your Easter holidays you will be able to discover the Passion Chants in the Grecia Salentina of Salento. Many villages celebrate the Holy Week with chants, shows and music that are based on the chronicles of Christ’s passion.

These chants or stories are normally composed of 66 verses and, in the past, were performed by farmers or storytellers, who walked with a palm tree along the narrow streets of the Grecia Salentina, and asked a fee at the end of their performance.

Last but not least, on the Monday following Easter (in Italy it’s called “Pasquetta”), discover the St. Vito Chapel and the pierced stone in Calimera. The chapel dates back to the XV century and it’s composed of one nave that preserves, in the middle of the floor, a pierced stone. This stone is actually a megalith that already existed when the churh was built. It represents a feminine phallic symbol related to the pagan ceremony of the passage through the hole, propitiatory for fertility. The diameter of the hole is of approximately 23 centimetres but, according to the legend, everybody can pass through the megalith. On one part of the surface, there are some pictures maybe representing the Saint’s effigy.

Nowadays, both men and women believe that passing through the pierced megalith brings good luck.
