The gold of Salento

Apart from being the month when casks are opened to drink the new wine, November is the month when there is the gathering of olives and the salentine countryside seethes with people. It is a work, of course, but also a tradition, a feast getting together people around olive trees full of fruits: men and women who crop carefulness and respectfully olives by hand in order to avoid they can touch the soil.

The salentine olive oil has been considering the “gold of Salento” for the ancient time. A lot of hypogeous olive presses have been excavated from the subsoil of the city of Lecce and the whole salentine area; many ships landed in the Roman port of San Cataldo, coming from everywhere to supply with the salentine olive oil in order to market it in the whole empire.

Olive trees characterize the salentine countryside with their foliage, silvering by the north wind, called tramontana, and their trunks, so vigorous and extraordinary to look like real masterpieces. Experience a walking among these monuments of the salentine nature is so touching because of the feeling of peace they are able to communicate, the tales of hard work and men they are able to tale: a new way to enjoy a holiday in Salento and discover wonders of its nature.
