2011 – New Year in Salento

Christmas is coming and Salento is going to celebrate it with many not to be missed events:
- from 8 to 26 December the traditional “Fair of Saint Lucia” takes place in Saint Oronzo Square, in the heart of Lecce. This event is repeated for centuries and has as protagonists the “puppets”, that is handmade clay and papier-mâché figures which represent crib figures and also complete cribs. More than one hundred craftsmen will attend this charming Christmas market in the heart of the city and will captivate visitors with their original creations.
- from December 3 to January 8 a spectacular event will light up the city of Baroque: it is called “Illuminating Lecce” the event that replaces the traditional Christmas lights with eight installations of contemporary art, which will create a light path with a strong visual impact.
- a fascinating itinerary winds its way among the most representative cribs realized in Salento, especially in ancient villages. Many live Christmas cribs will take place, as the Tricase Live Christmas crib, realized on the Monte Orco Hill, illuminated by thousands of lights and torches and by the great comet…you will experience the feeling of being dipped into the Betlemme atmosphere two thousand years ago.
- even if it’s Christmas time and the summer period has expired, the typical “sagre” continue to cheer up hearts and palates in the squares of the villages, between the “pizzica” notes and the flavors of traditional dishes.
- on the 28th December in Zollino the “Festa de lu focu” (The fire festival): a long night of dancing, singing, folk music and local cuisine, with the show of street performers and spontaneous rounds around the fire.
- then in the city of Martyrs, Otranto, rises the first dawn of the new year. Before this date, the city is animated by a month of events, a festival called “L’Alba dei Popoli” (Peoples’ Sunrise) that will reach its top on the 31st December with the Stadio Live Concert. But the party doesn’t end at the stroke of midnight; in fact it is traditional to go to the most eastern point of Italy, the lighthouse “Palascìa”, not far from Otranto, to witness the first sunshine in the new year, among fireworks and multimedia shows.

For Easter weekend and 25^th April weekend, it is scheduled a sailing boat outing. Departure will be from the port of Otranto, where two experienced skippers will welcome guests to sail to North or South according to the wind, inside the Coastal Park of Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca. You will get the bay of “Le Orte”, Santa Cesarea and other places. The coast in this area is high and steep, often inaccessible by land, rich in caves and the sea is unbelievably blue. It is a real experience sailing following the coast. You will “have lunch” on board consisting of a light menu with “friselline” (typical local bread) with tomatoes, bread cooked in the stone oven, different kind of fresh cheese, season vegetables, fruits, dried figs and local wine. Return in Otranto will be at 6 p.m.
