It’s Carnival time!

Many Salentine villages celebrate the most enjoyable festival of the year with carnival float and costume parades, confetti, fun, music, fancy dress parties, dancing and pure fun. Children, and people in general, crowding the historical centres, watch with joy carnival floats passing, dance the pizzica dancing and parade together with costume procession.
Carnival in Salento has very old origins and it is so deeply rooted that the whole community is involved in the organization of the famous carnival floats, real work of art made by papier mâché masters. Many Salentine villages, as Aradeo, Casarano, Melendugno, Martignano, Supersano, Vernole, celebrate Carnival with carnival float and costume parades, music and tasting of Salentine typical dishes. But the most famous Carnival is the Carnival in Gallipoli that this year will celebrate the 69th edition.
An unaltered tradition from years consisting in the organization of wonderful masks, carnival floats will parade along the small streets of the old town of Gallipoli accompanied by music, confetti, dancing and a lot of fun. The traditional mask of “Lu Tidoru” will be, once again this year, among the symbolical masks of Carnival in Gallipoli. It represents Teodoro, a young soldier who came back home from the war to celebrate carnival, but he ate so many sausages he choked to death.
Why do not you come and see Salento during this Carnival time? You will astonish by joy and cheerfulness typical of Salento peninsula, above all in this period of the year; you will find out old carnival traditions; you will be surrounded by a whirl of emotions!
