Spring in Salento Peninsula

May, the last month of spring in the northern hemisphere, is the month that leads to summer. Tourists and people of Salento who begin to crowd coastal areas and towns walking around the city centre to discover every hidden corner are delighted by the typical magic white stone, shaped by a lot of sculptors and stone-cutters over the centuries. In this month, Salento comes alive!
The social life of the people of Salento comes alive as well. Fairs and cultural events celebrate the old traditions of this wonderful land. Concerts, performances, shows and exhibitions: from now on art, culture, tradition and events follow one after the other on the border between the sacred and the profane.
In several Salento villages, the first day of May is the day when the streets of the centre are full of contagious gaiety with sounds of traditional musical bands and lots of stalls that satisfy both eyes and taste.
In other villages the Holy Virgin is celebrated through religious rites handed down through the generations, such as the celebration of the Holy Virgin of Montevergine in Palmariggi where women, and not men as usual, carry the image on their shoulders along the streets; and in Roca you can participate in the traditional celebrations which reinact the escape towards the hinterland of its inhabitants because of the invasion of the Turks in 1589.
Many of the events are typical of this period of the year and this magic land where tradition, art and nature are the perfect union making a holiday in Salento in the month of May so unforgettable!
